We need to talk about my dirty little home-design secret.
Most people daydream about chef’s kitchens with sprawling marble islands, or spa-like primary bathrooms complete with soaking tubs and heated floors. But if I were building a home from scratch tomorrow? The room getting just as much deliberate, uncompromised, hyper-thoughtful design as the kitchen or bath is the laundry room.
I’m serious. The laundry is usually the forgotten stepchild of residential architecture—relegated to a dark corner of the basement, a glorified hallway between the garage and the kitchen, or a cramped closet where you can barely pivot with a full basket. It’s treated as pure utility, an afterthought packed into whatever leftover square footage is remaining.
I say it’s time to liberate the laundry.
In my dream home, the laundry room is a sanctuary of ultimate efficiency and quiet luxury. I’m talking custom cabinetry with built-in pull-out sorting hampers for darks, lights, and delicates. I want a dedicated deep soaking sink with a commercial-style spray faucet, a sleek fold-down drying rack system, and a built-in steaming station. Give me acres of continuous, pristine counter space at ergonomic height—because no one should have to fold fitted sheets on top of a warm, vibrating dryer.
Add in brilliant natural light from a massive window, an under-cabinet Bluetooth speaker setup for my favorite podcasts, and custom cubbies for every detergent, wool dryer ball, and stain remover spray, and suddenly laundry day isn't a chore anymore. It’s an event. It’s a ritual.
When a space is designed with that level of intention, the daily grind feels less like work and more like a moment of order in a chaotic world.
So, I’ve laid my cards on the table. What about you? If you were designing your ultimate dream home with zero constraints, what’s your secret design obsession?
